An ADR shipment passes a roadside check without delay when the right data and documents are ready from the request onwards. When we have them at the start, you get a clear quotation, one dispatcher contact and documents delivered with the shipment. This article explains what to put in a request for ADR freight in packaged goods.
Five details without which no quote is possible
ADR is the agreement on the international carriage of dangerous goods by road. Dangerous goods are divided into classes, for example gases (class 2), flammable liquids (class 3), corrosives (class 8) or miscellaneous dangerous substances (class 9). Each substance has a four-digit UN number, which you look up in the ADR table to find its class. The rules are updated every two years, so always work with the edition in force.
Include in your request:
- the UN number, for example 1203 for petrol,
- the ADR class,
- the packing group, if the substance has one,
- the weight of the shipment and number of packages,
- the package type: jerrycan, drum, carton with inner packagings or IBC.
From these we assess whether the shipment can go by road and under which regime. Without the UN number and packing group, no commitment can be made.
Packaged goods and IBCs
Packagings and IBCs must carry UN approval and be in a condition matching the date of their last test. For IBCs, check the test date before loading. A package with an expired test can stop the loading.
Limited quantities (LQ)
Shipments in limited (LQ) or excepted quantities follow a simpler regime and cost less. Column 7a of Table A in chapter 3.2 of ADR sets the maximum quantity per inner packaging for each substance. A package that meets the conditions of chapter 3.4 is exempt from most other ADR provisions. The gross mass of a combination packaging must not exceed 30 kg, or 20 kg for a shrink-wrapped or stretch-wrapped tray. The package must carry the limited-quantity mark, a diamond with black top and bottom corners. Check the details in the ADR edition in force. State in the request that the goods are LQ, along with the weight of the packages.
Who needs what
| Who |
What is needed |
| Carrier |
authorisation to carry dangerous goods |
| Driver |
valid ADR certificate for the class |
| Vehicle |
equipment, fire extinguishers and marking as required |
| Consignor |
correct classification, packaging and marking of the shipment |
The consignor is responsible for classification, packaging and marking. Regulations require an enterprise that dispatches dangerous goods to appoint a safety adviser (DGSA). We do not replace the adviser. We check your documents and point out anything missing before loading.
Documents
Every shipment comes with a CMR consignment note confirmed at loading and unloading. For ADR, a transport document with the UN number, class, packing group and number of packages is added, plus written instructions for the driver in a language they understand. The carrier's liability is covered by insurance under the CMR Convention. The convention limits it to 8.33 SDR per kilogram of shipment weight, not to the invoice value of the goods. For valuable goods, state the value in your request and we arrange extra insurance.
Groupage or a full vehicle
An ADR shipment can go as groupage if the mixed-loading prohibitions for those classes allow it and the carrier has free ADR capacity. If the rules do not allow shared loading, we propose a full-truck shipment. Certain classes need special permits, and we verify them before confirming a date.
How to avoid delays at loading
Before the vehicle arrives, have the marked packages, safety data sheets and the data for the transport document ready. At loading we check the ADR transport document, the instructions in writing for the driver and the package marking. If anything is missing, we tell you before loading, so the shipment does not stand still at a roadside check. We plan loading around your time window.
