If your company runs its own trucks or books transport over the turn of the year, the change to the Slovak toll on 1 January 2027 affects you, and you can prepare for it now. On 1 October 2026 the National Motorway Company (NDS) announced that it will run the toll system itself from the new year. The current SkyToll system will no longer be used from the new year.
What exactly changes
According to the NDS announcement reported by the TASR news agency, and the official emyto.sk portal:
- From 1 January 2027 NDS runs the toll system. The service is operated for NDS by a new domestic provider, CzechToll.
- From 1 December 2026 vehicles can be preregistered from the old system to the new one on emyto.sk.
- SkyToll customers must preregister their vehicles, return the current on-board unit and collect a new one. They can choose the domestic provider CzechToll or a European provider such as Eurowag, Telepass or Toll4Europe.
- Until 1 January 2027 SkyToll customers keep driving in Slovakia with their current units. The new units start collecting tolls only from the new year.
- Vehicles already using a European provider are not affected by the preregistration, according to NDS.
NDS says the toll collection mechanism stays the same for carriers and the same conditions will apply to all providers. The announcement does not mention new rates.
On 7 October 2026 the trade portal trans.info added that the procedure for replacing the units has not been published yet, and that Slovakia's Supreme Audit Office called the implementation timetable risky.
If you run your own vehicles
Manufacturers often run their own trucks to supply other plants or deliver to customers. If those vehicles pay the toll through SkyToll, these steps are yours:
- Find out which vehicles use a SkyToll unit and which already have a European provider.
- Decide whether to move to the domestic provider CzechToll or to a European provider. A European provider suits vehicles that also drive abroad.
- Follow emyto.sk and preregister your vehicles from 1 December 2026. Do not leave it to the last days of the year.
- Plan the unit swap so that your vehicles are not standing still in the first days of January.
If you book transport
With booked transport, the toll is the carrier's job, not the shipper's. The switch, however, falls into the period when capacity on the market is tight. Before the year end, before company-wide holidays and before public holidays, prices rise and free trucks become scarce. If some carriers are late with their unit swap, it will show at the start of January.
What is worth doing:
- Book shipments over the turn of the year early, especially loadings in the last days of December and in the first week of January.
- Share your volumes in advance. If you know what you will ship at the start of the year, capacity can be reserved.
- Ask carriers you contract directly whether they have the preregistration and unit swap planned.
- Confirm dates with your customers in writing, so it is clear who guarantees what if something moves.
How we handle it at RUSH
Tolls and fees are included in the price in our quotation, so you do not have to calculate them yourself. We find capacity in our carrier network. Before the year end and before holidays we work with longer lead times and a wider network. If you know your volumes for the turn of the year, share them and we will reserve the capacity for you.
We ship from Slovakia across the European Union and to Switzerland, full truckloads (FTL) and groupage (LTL). Our most common routes are described on the pages transport to Germany, transport to Czechia and transport to Austria. When a shipment cannot wait, even in January, express transport helps.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to register anything as a shipper? No, unless you run your own vehicles that pay the toll. With booked transport, the carrier takes care of the toll.
Will the toll price change? The NDS announcement about taking over the system does not mention new rates. If they change, you will see it in the quotation in advance, not afterwards.
Where can I find current information? On the official emyto.sk portal. NDS will keep updating it.
