Shipments arrive on time before Christmas when loading is planned around the holiday truck bans, not around the production calendar. This year it matters more than usual. Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday, so trucks in Germany and Austria stand still for three days in a row, from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 December. On top of that, Slovakia changed the hours of its own bans on 1 September 2026.
What changed in Slovakia
The amendment to the Slovak Road Traffic Act (Act No. 131/2026 Coll.) has applied since 1 September 2026. On motorways, expressways and class I roads it covers vehicles over 7.5 t and vehicles over 3.5 t with a trailer.
- Sunday and the last day of a rest period: ban from 06:00 to 22:00. It used to start at midnight.
- A single rest day after a working day: ban from 06:00 to 22:00.
- First day of a rest period of several days: ban from 09:00 to 19:00. It used to start at 07:00.
- New exemptions: among others, supplying manufacturing plants in continuous operation in Slovakia when loading or unloading takes place in Slovakia, and vehicles returning to Slovakia to the end of their journey.
For a manufacturer this means more time to load on Sunday morning and an easier return of vehicles home. The bans abroad have not changed, and that is where the unloading date is decided.
Calendar for November and December 2026
The bans apply to trucks over 7.5 t, in Poland over 12 t. Times are local.

Notes by country:
- Slovakia: 17 November is not a rest day in 2026, so freight traffic is not restricted that day. During the Christmas block from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December, expect restricted truck traffic.
- Czechia: the ban applies on Sundays and public holidays from 13:00 to 22:00. On Christmas Eve a truck can still load and leave in the morning.
- Germany: the ban applies on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00, also to trailers behind trucks. Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Sunday 27 December make three days without driving.
- Austria: besides holidays there is a Saturday ban from 15:00 to 24:00 and a night ban from 22:00 to 05:00 for vehicles without a low-noise certificate. On Tuesday 8 December transit through Austria stops too.
- Poland: Christmas Eve has been a public holiday since 2025, but it is not on the list of truck ban days. The ban applies on 25 and 26 December.
- Hungary: the ban runs from 22:00 on the eve of a holiday to 22:00 on the holiday. From 4 November to 1 March it does not apply to international transport by vehicles of a higher emission class. The carrier checks whether a given vehicle qualifies.
What it means for a manufacturer's logistics
If a truck loaded on Wednesday 23 December cannot unload in Germany by Thursday evening, it may continue only after 22:00 on Sunday 27 December. It will then unload on Monday 28 December. Many plants and warehouses also close earlier before the holidays.
- Plan unloading in Germany and Austria for Wednesday 23 December at the latest, ideally with a confirmed time slot. Loading in Slovakia then falls on Monday 21 or Tuesday 22 December.
- Allow a day of reserve for transit through Austria on 8 December. Trucks in transit, for example to Italy or Switzerland, stand still that day from 00:00 to 22:00.
- Remember 17 November in Czechia. It is a working day in Slovakia, but in Czechia trucks stop from 13:00. Transit to Germany and Poland through Czechia takes longer.
- Book early. Free vehicles run out fastest before the holidays. If you know your December volumes, tell us in advance and we will reserve capacity for you.
- Confirm dates with your customers in writing, including the last day they receive goods before the holidays and the first day after.
How to prepare an enquiry with all the details is described in How to prepare a transport enquiry and get an accurate quote. Transit times on the most common lanes are in Transport to Germany and Austria.
How we handle it at RUSH
We build the truck bans into the route plan when we quote, so the date we confirm already accounts for them. Dispatch is available around the clock, so we can work in a date change even just before the holidays. When a shipment cannot wait until the new year, express transport helps. Our most common lanes are described on transport to Germany and transport to Austria.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Slovak ban also apply on class II and III roads? The ban under § 39 covers motorways, expressways and class I roads. Class III roads have a separate restriction for vehicles over 12 t.
Do I as the shipper need to apply for an exemption? No. Exemptions and the route plan are the carrier's job. Send us the loading and unloading dates and the time slots.
How often do the rules change? Slovakia last changed them on 1 September 2026. We always check dates against the current rules before dispatch.
