Goods arrive before Christmas on time when you know the last loading day for each country and send your enquiry before the free vehicles run out. Christmas Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, so in Germany, Austria and France trucks do not move again after 24 December until the evening of Sunday 27 December. Below you will find the dates that follow from this, the holiday and New Year truck bans in nine countries, and the list of details for your enquiry.
Last loading dates
The dates in the table are RUSH's recommendation. They are based on the indicative transit times with one driver that we publish on our country pages and on the holiday truck bans. They assume unloading on Wednesday 23 December at the latest, because many plants and warehouses stop receiving goods before the holidays. We always confirm the exact date in the quote.

Why these days:
- The weekend of 19 and 20 December is the last one before the holidays. In Germany and Austria trucks stop on Sunday from 00:00 to 22:00, in France from Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00, in Italy on Sunday from 09:00 to 22:00. A shipment on a longer lane that loads on Friday loses a day over the weekend.
- Tuesday 8 December is a public holiday in Austria and Italy. Transit through Austria to Italy stops that day from 00:00 to 22:00, in Italy from 09:00 to 22:00. Anyone shipping to Italy in the first week of December allows a day of reserve.
- Thursday 24 December is not a ban day in Germany, Austria or Italy. In France the ban starts at 22:00. Unloading on Christmas Eve is nevertheless the exception in practice, which is why we plan for Wednesday 23 December.
- An enquiry three working days before loading gives us time in December to secure the vehicle and confirm your time slots. You get the quote within 2 hours, but a free vehicle before the holidays has to be booked earlier.
Truck bans over Christmas and New Year
The bans in Slovakia, Czechia, Germany, Austria, Poland and Hungary from 1 November to 27 December are set out in Christmas 2026 truck bans, including the change to the Slovak act from 1 September 2026. Here we add Italy, France and Spain and the turn of the year. Times are local, the bans apply to vehicles over 7.5 t, in Poland over 12 t.

Notes by country:
- Slovakia: on the first day of a rest period of several days the ban runs from 09:00 to 19:00, on Sundays and on the last day from 06:00 to 22:00. The Christmas block lasts from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December, so 24 Dec has 09:00–19:00 and 27 Dec has 06:00–22:00. A single holiday after a working day, such as Friday 1 January or Wednesday 6 January 2027, has a ban from 06:00 to 22:00.
- Germany: ban on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00 under § 30 StVO. The holidays with a ban are 25 and 26 December and 1 January; 24 and 31 December are working days. Epiphany applies only in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony-Anhalt.
- Austria: holiday ban on 8, 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 6 January from 00:00 to 22:00. On top of that every Saturday from 15:00 to 24:00 and every night from 22:00 to 05:00 for vehicles without a low-noise certificate.
- Italy: the 2026 calendar is set by the decree of the Ministry of Infrastructure of 12 December 2025 for vehicles over 7.5 t outside built-up areas. In December the ban applies every Sunday from 09:00 to 22:00 and likewise on 8, 25 and 26 December. The ministry issues the 2027 calendar at the end of the year.
- France: the general regime bans vehicles over 7.5 t from Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00 and on the eve of a public holiday from 22:00 to 22:00 the next day. The Bison Futé calendar for 2026 lists 24 Dec 22:00–24:00, 25 Dec 00:00–22:00, 31 Dec 22:00–24:00 and 1 Jan 2027 00:00–22:00. The Île-de-France region has its own additional hours, for example from 16:00 on 24 Dec in the direction out of Paris.
- Spain: there is no nationwide Sunday ban for general goods. The DGT resolution of 14 January 2026 restricts goods vehicles on specific road sections and dates, and vehicles with orange ADR plates according to a separate annex. We therefore plan routes to Spain by section, not by day of the week.
- Czechia, Poland, Hungary: Czechia bans driving on 24, 25 and 26 December and every Sunday from 13:00 to 22:00 on motorways and class I roads. Poland on 25 and 26 December from 08:00 to 22:00, with no ban on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. Hungary from 22:00 on the eve of a holiday to 22:00 on the holiday; from 4 November to 1 March the ban does not apply to international transport by vehicles of emission class Euro 3 or higher.
Capacity on the market in December
In its report for the third quarter of 2026, the TIMOCOM exchange puts the share of freight offers in all offers at 83% in July, 78% in August and 84% in September. It expects a value above 80% for October, 78% for November and 75% for December. At the same time it expects competition for available capacity during the Christmas season to increase again. Offers of free vehicles in the third quarter were 2.7% below the previous year. In its report for the second quarter of 2026, TIMOCOM stated that the number of free vehicles in Europe fell by 10.8% year on year and the average offered price in Europe reached 1.81 euros per kilometre, 12.8% more than a year earlier.
For a manufacturer this comes down to a simple rule: the earlier you announce your December volumes, the more certain your vehicle and date are. For regular shipments we reserve capacity in advance and adjust the quote only when the scope of the transport changes.
What to put in the enquiry
An accurate enquiry means an accurate quote without follow-up questions. Before Christmas the time slots matter most, because unloading in the last week before the holidays is squeezed into shorter hours.
- Full loading and unloading addresses and the consignee's time slots.
- Dimensions, weight and number of pallets, for groupage also whether the goods are stackable. When groupage is enough and when a whole truck pays off is described in Pallet freight or a full truckload.
- The consignee's last day of receiving goods before the holidays and the first day after them.
- ADR shipments with the UN number, class and packing group as described in ADR transport of packaged goods.
- A contact person who can answer follow-up questions, also on the day of loading.
The full checklist is in How to prepare a transport enquiry and get an accurate quote.
How we handle it at RUSH
We build the truck bans and the holiday closures of warehouses into the route plan when we quote, so the date we confirm already accounts for them. When a shipment cannot wait until the new year, express transport helps. Lanes and transit times are described on transport to Germany, transport to Austria, transport to Italy, transport to France and transport to Spain.
Frequently asked questions
Will a shipment to Germany make it if I send the enquiry on Monday 21 December? For unloading in southern Germany or Austria yes, if a vehicle is free and loading takes place on Tuesday 22 December. For northern Germany it is already tight, so we recommend express transport or a date after the holidays.
Can trucks run between the holidays, from 28 to 30 December? Yes, Monday to Wednesday are working days without a ban in all the countries listed. Many plants have a company-wide shutdown, though, so confirm that the consignee will receive the goods.
Who handles exemptions from the bans? The carrier. Send us the loading and unloading dates, the rest is our job.
